Thomas Zwagerman
Research Software Engineer
Biography
I am a Research Software Engineer (RSE) in the Digital Innovation Team. We are a team of RSEs developing software infrastructure that supports the long term sustainable delivery of impacts from digital projects at BAS.
I currently work on the Autonomous Marine Operations Planning (AMOP) project with the AI Lab, and on enhancing ice sheet model ensembling workflows with the Ice Dynamics and Paleoclimate team.
Prior to joining BAS in February 2024, I worked as an Environmental Data Scientist and as a Spatial Data Analyst at the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH). I developed tools and processes for the automated processing and quality assurance of air quality and climate change datasets, mostly written in R. I was also part of the Informatics Liaison Network and the Environmental Information Data Centre, where I promoted best practices in data stewardship and helped researchers make their data or software Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR).
Before joining UKCEH I graduated with a BSc in Ecological & Environmental Sciences from the University of Edinburgh. I wrote my dissertation on vegetation change impact on Arctic land-atmosphere interactions and snowmelt, using a Weather Research and Forecasting model.
